Here’s the new definition:
Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualised as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterised by three dimensions:
- feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion;
- increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job;
- reduced professional efficacy. Burn-out refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life.
In other words….
Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands. As the stress continues, you begin to lose the interest or motivation that led you to take on a certain role in the first place.
If constant stress has you feeling disillusioned, helpless, and completely exhausted, you may be suffering from burnout.
When you’re burned out from stress, problems seem insurmountable, everything looks bleak, and it’s difficult to muster up the energy to care—let alone do something about your situation.
The unhappiness and detachment that burnout causes can threaten your job, your relationships, and your health.
The unfortunate part is that it is the burnout to which the poor suffering individual, doctors, coaches and therapists concentrate their resources. It’s actually the stressor that needs addressing. If not, the burnout will manifest again, and again and again.
Burnout reduces productivity and saps your energy, leaving you feeling increasingly helpless, hopeless, cynical, and resentful.
If you feel like you meet the criteria, you might want to mention it next time you’re seeking medical or mental health care. Burnout isn’t considered a medical condition, but it represents added stress in your life that you may need to deal with. Seek professional help or consider whether taking a “mental health day” from work may give you enough time and space to consider your options.
